The prologue..
In 2015, I started a blog called ‘The Ali Sandwiches’…
I challenged myself to write every day for 365 days sharing my experiences and learnings of a life with my Mum being taken daily by Alzheimer’s, solo parenting during the week with 2 boys under 10, struggling with a new identity when the one I had always had was ‘professional corporate working mum’ …
…but I had walked away from a career that while paid me handsomely - was crippling me physically and emotionally on the inside and out.
The Ali Sandwiches became a daily ritual for me to reflect on life, love, parenting, the books I was reading to help me navigate my change in circumstances, understand my Mum’s disease, and without realising it, I began the ‘journey’ of unbecoming who I had been brought up to be, perhaps even ‘groomed’ to be – a professional woman, then a dutiful wife, then the perfect parent, daughter, daughter in law, aunt, godmother, friend… and all things expected of a girl born in the 1970’s.
It ended up becoming so much more.
A journal that became a guide to others going through grief, marital tension, heartbreak, loss, grief … and how to start life again from pretty much nothing.
It became my sanctuary for 911 days.
A book that may one day be published. Maybe.
Or maybe it will just out there online…
Under the summer solstice I felt an urge.
An urge to make writing a real feature and presence in my life again.
The name hit me immediately.
A lightening bolt of realisation.
These next years, the next decade, the one I notch up my 50th birthday and our 20th wedding anniversary will hold the codes of living not just well, or ‘living our best life’ – god, I hate that cliché phrase -
These pages will contain my mental downloads, that end up becoming a real channelled wisdom.
These pages will contain not just my dedication to my family, my teenage sons or my enigma of a husband…
..or determination in my mission in my work to create a ripple of joy around the world
..or discipline to the holistic health of my body, bones & brain…
because it will need more than that.
It will be where I devote myself to living ‘the brilliant years’ in my body, in the boardrooms and bedrooms of my life.
